The Benefits of Regular Lawn Aeration and How to Do It Right

Aeration is one of the most important yet overlooked aspects of lawn care. If your grass looks tired, compacted, or prone to puddling, it’s time to consider aerating. Let’s break down why this simple step makes such a big difference and how you can do it correctly.

What is Lawn Aeration?  Lawn aeration involves creating small holes in the soil to allow air, water, and nutrients to reach the roots. This practice alleviates soil compaction, promotes healthy root growth, and improves overall lawn health.

Why You Need Aeration
  • Reduces soil compaction
  • Improves nutrient absorption
  • Enhances water penetration
  • Supports root development and resilience

When to Aerate Your Lawn
  • Spring and fall are the best times to aerate, as the soil is moist and grass is actively growing.
  • Avoid aerating during extreme heat or cold to minimize stress on the turf.

How to Aerate Your Lawn
  • Use a core aerator to remove small plugs of soil.
  • Leave the plugs on the surface to break down naturally or remove them, but be careful not to let them get smashed like "cow patties"
  • Consider overseeding, top dressing, and fertilization to maximize results.

Don’t have time to aerate your lawn yourself? Leave it to the professionals at Mahalic and Sons!
