The established neighborhoods here have something the newer developments do not: forty years of tree growth. Those trees are the reason people love these streets, and they are also the reason the grass under them keeps thinning out no matter how much fertilizer goes down.

Bermuda, which is what most North Texas lawns are, is a full-sun grass. Under a mature canopy it simply does not get the light it needs, and no program will change that. What a good program does is get the most out of the light that is there, and recognize the spots where a different answer makes more sense than another season of patching.

Mow the shade higher. More leaf surface means more light captured, so shaded zones get a taller cut than the open yard.
Water shade less, not more. Ground under a canopy dries slowly, and thin grass there is usually a light problem being made worse by overwatering.
Thin the canopy where you can. Letting more light through does more for the turf below than any fertilizer.
Know when to stop fighting. In deep shade a bed, ground cover or mulch ring looks better year-round than grass that never fills in.
