Lawn Care guide: Top Dressing

Why Top Dress Your Lawn?
  • Soil Improvement: Top dressing with organic matter can enhance soil structure and promote microbial life.
  • Leveling: It helps in leveling out bumps and depressions in your lawn, providing a smoother surface.
  • Thatch Reduction: Top dressing can help break down thatch, a layer of organic debris that can prevent water and nutrients from reaching the soil.
  • Nutrient Boost: Supplies the lawn with essential nutrients, especially when combined with compost.
  • Grass Health: Encourages denser growth and can help in overseeding efforts.

Top Dressing Schedule (Options):
  1. Early Spring: Prepare the lawn for the growing season, especially if overseeding.
  2. Late Spring/Early Summer: Address any uneven areas and provide nutrients for peak growth.
  3. Late Summer: Optional, based on lawn health and leveling needs.
  4. Early Fall: Strengthen the lawn for the upcoming winter and assist with any overseeding.

Post-Top Dressing Care:
  • Water: Lightly water the lawn after top dressing to help the material settle and integrate with the soil.
  • Pets and Children: Keep them off the freshly dressed lawn for at least 24 hours to prevent disturbance.
  • Mowing: Wait at least a week after top dressing before mowing to allow the lawn to adjust.
  • Foot Traffic: Limit for the first 48 hours to ensure even settling of the dressing material.

Special Note on Preemergent: If you've applied a preemergent herbicide, be cautious with top dressing, especially if overseeding. The preemergent can prevent new grass seed from germinating. Always check product recommendations.
In summary, top dressing is a beneficial practice for maintaining a healthy and even warm-season grass lawn. Adhering to the schedule and post-care steps ensures optimal results.
