Lawn Care guide: Weed Control

Why Apply Weed Control Four Times a Year?
  • Consistent Control: Regular applications ensure weeds don't get a foothold at any time during the year.
  • Target Different Weeds: Different weeds germinate and grow at various times. Multiple applications target both early and late-emerging weeds.
  • Pre-emergent Protection: Preemergent herbicides prevent weed seeds from germinating, offering proactive control.
  • Protect Lawn Health: Weeds compete with grass for nutrients. Regular control ensures your grass gets what it needs.
  • Aesthetic Appeal: A weed-free lawn looks cleaner and is more visually appealing.
  • Prevent Seed Spread: Controlling weeds before they seed prevents future infestations.

Weed Control Schedule:
  1. Early Spring: Apply preemergent to target early germinating weeds and prevent their spread.
  2. Late Spring/Early Summer: Address any late spring weeds, prepare for summer varieties, and consider a second preemergent application for late-emerging weeds.
  3. Late Summer: Control heat-loving weeds that thrive in high temperatures.
  4. Early Fall: Apply another round of preemergent to prepare the lawn for winter and target late-season weeds.

Post-Weed Control Application Care:
  • Water: Depending on the product used, you might need to water the lawn to activate the weed control, especially preemergents. Follow specific product recommendations.
  • Pets and Children: Keep them off the lawn for 24 hours post-application for safety.
  • Mowing: Wait at least 24-48 hours after the weed control application before mowing.
  • Foot Traffic: Limit for the first 24 hours to ensure even application and absorption.

In summary, regular weed control, including pre-emergent applications, is vital for a healthy and aesthetically pleasing warm-season grass lawn. Following the schedule and post-application care ensures a weed-free lawn throughout the year.
